I came across these when looking to find out which crossover is used in the Barcelona system: HiFiDo ?????ǥ????ʤ??Ǥ??㤤?ޤ?2
Crossover is N501-8A(not sure if it includes the cover can) plus a compensation network(see pic).
Any info on the additional network? Could it be the 30904 shown in this thread http://www.audioheritage.org/vbullet...-N501-8b/page2 ?
They look alike but I can't read the component values.

9846-8A has 30903. However the Barcelona x-over in the pics has more components. Probably baffle-step compensation and horn attenuation for home use ala 30904. What do you think?

My 9846's have, and AFAIK always have had 30904's.
The 1975 reference guide is incorrect in this regard.

I'd offer this, you generally have to "work at" making a 416B sound bad.
In that sealed alignment it might be possible to more easily damage a 416 from over excursion. You might have to observe lower LFE power handling or even high pass filter them to be safe. That said, i would guess that a sealed alignment might also adversely affect the 416's smooth upward extension into the midrange. I defer to one of our resident design experts.

I assume you mean the 30923, which doesn't include impedance compensation on the woofer. Both have CD horn EQ to flatten/smooth out the 511's 'honk' and extend its usable HF output. IOW, the horn's output is shelved down/flattened to line up with the driver's much lower HF output up high.

Didn't know this, thanks! My experience with these were limited to an audition at the distributor. I auditioned the Barcelona several times at various venues and they sounded enough different that I would never guess they had the same electronics other than the N501-8A.
Hmm, I just looked and the '75 reference does list the 30904 for both, though the 9846's brochure lists the 30923 while the Barcelona's lists none.
The 9846BX OTOH has the 771 amp and 30923 since impedance compensation would serve no useful purpose in a digital system.

I don't recall how much net Vb the 9846 has, but it's a fair amount, probably Altec's recommended 8 ft^3 max for sealed, so way too big for the 416B unless it's either driven with a high output impedance and/or vented, then it would be a little larger than optimum based on the '74 cab design brochure.
WRT using the 30904, the impedance compensation would be nice to have, though its components may not spec close enough as is and its CD horn EQ may damp the horn down too much, though as good a place as any to start tweaking to suit.
Historically, using the attenuator to shelve down the horn, then wiring a by-pass cap around it to allow the highs to progressively rise till they are unattenuated out around 12-20 kHz depending on one's hearing and/or available source material has proven good enough for many folks, so you may want to try this first.
